ADHD-What We Fail To Understand.

ADHD- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Most people have no idea what this term means, some people just think it is a fancy name to describe people who lack focus or kids who are very playful. What they fail to acknowledge that just like OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), and anxiety disorder, and eating disorder etc. people get judged, and bullied, and misunderstood for it. Adults and children with ADHD struggle with themselves on a daily basis. Before I go any further, let us understand what ADHD is all about.

adhd-in-adult-advances-in-pharmacological-interventions-4-638.jpgAttention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurologically based condition related to hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and very short or lack of attention span. It is the most common human brain disorder there is. It occurs in about 6 to 7 percent of children between 5 to 17 years old, and 4 percent of adults deal with ADHD also. People with ADHD tend to have difficulty concentrating, sitting still, controlling impulses, remembering little details, paying attention, staying organized, following instructions etc.

In ADHD the frontal part of the brain is sluggish because not enough Noradrenalin and Dopamine (brain chemicals) is being produced in the base of the brain. The slow and sluggish nature of the frontal lobes of the brain affects other parts and causes problems with thinking, feeling, focusing, attention, concentration, performance etc. and most times ADHD patients are tagged uncaring, and unemotional.

ADHD was formerly known as ADD, but was renamed in 1994. It was broken down into three different types;

AN INATTENTIVE TYPE. Signs include

  • trouble paying attention to details, or making careless errors in schoolwork and other activities
  • problems with organisation
  • difficulty following or obeying instructions
  • forgetfulness in daily activities
  • listening problems, or inability to pay attention
  • difficulty staying focused on tasks
  • distractibility , easily bored with anything
  • tendencies to lose things
  • avoidance or dislikes of tasks that require mental effort, procrastination ADHD-Symptoms.jpgA HYPERACTIVE-COMPULSIVE TYPE. Sings include
  1. excessive talking
  2. excessive running, climbing, activity
  3. difficulty remaining seated
  4. fidgeting, shaking, squirming, inability to just stay still
  5. problems interrupting or intruding
  6. difficulty waiting in line for a turn
  7. blurting out answers before hearing the full question
  8. difficulty being quiet, usually thinks out loud
  9. always seems to be ‘on the go’, always moving
  10. constant day dreamer

A COMBINED TYPE. Signs include                                                                                                              This is the most common, it is a combination of the two types.

ADHD is not sugar-rush, it is not caused by excessive intake of sugar, or poor parenting, and people with this disorder are often misunderstood for restless, loud mouthed people, that lack proper manners and behavior and this causes them to distance themselves from people, most times leading to depression, negative self-image, relationship problems etc.

Bottom line is, ADHD is like every other disease or disorder, it affects more lives than you can imagine, and people don’t seem to understand or help ADHD patients make their day to day interactions easier. ADHD has no cure, but there are medications recommended for people with the disorder, and there are behavioral management methods one can use to control them and become organized. Some are outlining tasks, cutting down distractions, and improving one’s diet.
